Outpatient Treatment for OCD
Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) can make everyday life feel exhausting. Intrusive thoughts, unwanted fears, and repetitive behaviors or mental rituals can take up time and make it difficult to focus on work, relationships, school, or the things you enjoy.
At Mission Connection, we provide outpatient treatment for adults experiencing OCD and related mental health concerns. Our approach combines evidence-based therapy, individualized treatment planning, and supportive community care to help you better understand OCD and develop healthier ways to respond to difficult thoughts and feelings.
What Is OCD?
OCD is a mental health condition characterized by obsessions, compulsions, or both.
- Obsessions are unwanted, recurring thoughts, images, urges, or fears that can cause significant distress.
- Compulsions are repetitive behaviors or mental acts that a person feels driven to perform in response to an obsession or to reduce anxiety.
Compulsions can include behaviors such as excessive:
- Checking.
- Washing.
- Counting.
- Seeking reassurance.
They can also be less visible, such as:
- Mentally reviewing events.
- Repeating phrases in your mind.
- Trying to neutralize an unwanted thought.
OCD is more than being particular, organized, or concerned about cleanliness. When obsessions and compulsions become difficult to control or begin interfering with daily life, professional treatment can help.
Outpatient OCD Treatment at Mission Connection
OCD treatment is not one-size-fits-all. At Mission Connection, we develop treatment plans around your symptoms, goals, and level of support needed.
Our outpatient programs can provide structured care while allowing you to continue living at home and, when appropriate, maintain your everyday responsibilities.
Treatment may include:
- Individual therapy.
- Group therapy.
- Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT).
- Exposure and response prevention (ERP).
- Psychiatric evaluation and medication management, when appropriate.
- Family support.
- Personalized treatment planning.
- Skills-based education and coping strategies.
Mission Connection uses evidence-based approaches, including CBT and ERP, to address the patterns that can keep OCD symptoms going.
Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP) for OCD
Exposure and response prevention, commonly called ERP, is a specialized form of cognitive behavioral therapy used to treat OCD.
ERP involves gradually facing situations, thoughts, or triggers that cause anxiety while learning not to respond with the compulsive behavior or ritual that OCD typically demands.
For example, someone with contamination-related OCD may gradually work toward tolerating contact with a feared situation without immediately performing a washing ritual. The specific exercises depend on the individual’s symptoms and are developed with guidance from a trained professional.
The goal is not to force you to stop having unwanted thoughts. Instead, treatment can help you change how you respond to those thoughts and gradually build confidence in your ability to tolerate uncertainty and distress.
Mission Connection offers CBT and ERP as part of its OCD treatment approach, with treatment tailored to each person’s symptoms and goals.
Managing OCD Without Letting It Control Your Life
OCD can create a cycle in which an intrusive thought leads to anxiety, followed by a compulsion that provides temporary relief. Over time, this cycle can become increasingly difficult to break.
Treatment can help you recognize these patterns and develop new skills for responding to intrusive thoughts and uncomfortable emotions.
With support from your treatment team, you may work on:
- Recognizing OCD thought patterns.
- Understanding the cycle of obsessions and compulsions.
- Increasing your ability to tolerate uncertainty.
- Reducing reliance on compulsive behaviors.
- Developing healthier coping strategies.
- Improving emotional regulation.
- Strengthening relationships and daily functioning.
The goal is not necessarily to eliminate every unwanted thought. Instead, treatment focuses on helping you respond to OCD in ways that give you greater freedom and control over your life.
