Expert Advice on Prioritizing Mental Health Amidst Parenting Challenges

We are pleased to share that our Executive Director, Ashley Peña, LCSW, was featured in theSkimm’s newsletter article titled, Are you in a ‘ShouldStorm?’ In this piece, Ashley offers valuable insights on how parents can prioritize their mental health amidst the demands of busy family life.

Ashley emphasizes that neglecting mental health can lead to increased irritability, anxiety, and a sense of disconnection. To counteract these effects, she suggests several practical strategies:

Schedule Short Breaks: Even dedicating five minutes can serve as a valuable reset. Ashley advises, “Taking a brief pause, stepping away from heightened alertness, or breaking free from autopilot can help you discover a moment of groundedness.” Activities during this time can include reflection, brief guided meditation, stepping outside, reading, or listening to music.

Seek Support: Building a supportive network and utilizing it for self-care can significantly enhance mental well-being. Ashley notes that when parents are solely immersed in their role, it’s easy to lose touch with their core identity. Finding support allows for reconnection with oneself.

Allocate Alone Time: Continuous overstimulation can heighten anxiety. Scheduling quiet moments alone fosters self-awareness and provides an opportunity to reflect on personal feelings and needs. Simple activities like going for a walk or taking a bath can be beneficial.

Release Parental Guilt: Ashley acknowledges that letting go of guilt is challenging but crucial. Demonstrating to children that prioritizing mental health and taking personal time is essential for their development as well.

At Mission Connection, we are committed to supporting parents in maintaining their mental health while navigating the complexities of raising children.
