Outpatient Treatment for Dual Diagnosis
Finding the right support when you struggle with both mental health and substance use issues at the same time can feel complicated. At Mission Connection, we provide outpatient treatment for people experiencing co-occurring conditions, also known as a dual diagnosis.
Our treatment approach takes the whole person into consideration rather than addressing one concern in isolation. Through personalized treatment planning, therapy, psychiatric support, and connection with a supportive community, our expert clinical team helps you develop practical tools for managing symptoms and moving toward greater stability.
What Is Dual Diagnosis?
Dual diagnosis means having both a mental health condition and a substance use disorder at the same time. Treatment for dual diagnosis often involves greater complexity because these conditions can affect one another, sometimes making symptoms more difficult to understand or manage.
For example, someone experiencing anxiety or depression may also struggle with alcohol or drug use as a way to cope with difficult emotions. Also commonly seen is how substance use can contribute to changes in mood, anxiety, sleep, relationships, and overall mental health.
When a person has these co-occurring concerns, treating only one condition may not address the full picture. Instead, an integrated treatment approach can help address both concerns as part of a coordinated plan.
Outpatient Dual Diagnosis Treatment at Mission Connection
Mission Connection offers structured outpatient care for people who need more support than traditional weekly therapy but do not require the around-the-clock care provided at residential or inpatient treatment.
Our outpatient programs allow you to receive consistent clinical support while continuing to live at home and, when appropriate, maintain work, school, family, and other daily responsibilities.
Your treatment plan may include:
- Individual therapy.
- Group therapy.
- Psychiatric services and medication management, when appropriate.
- Family support.
- Skills-based education.
- Personalized treatment planning.
- Evidence-based therapeutic approaches.
Our clinicians customize your treatment plan based on your individual needs. Several therapies may be incorporated, such as:
- Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT).
- Dialectical behavior therapy (DBT).
- Acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT).
- Trauma-focused approaches.
- Other clinically supported methods.
Treating Mental Health and Substance Use Together
Our goal in dual diagnosis treatment is to understand the interaction between your symptoms, behaviors, substance use, relationships, and daily environment. Instead of choosing one concern to address first, we work comprehensively.
Your treatment team can work with you to:
- Identify patterns.
- Develop healthier coping strategies.
- Manage difficult emotions.
- Build skills that support long-term wellness.
Treatment may also include psychiatric evaluation and medication management when clinically appropriate. Your care plan is developed around your specific needs, goals, and level of support.
Flexible Outpatient Levels of Care
Mission Connection offers different levels of outpatient care depending on the amount of structure and support you need.
Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP)
An intensive outpatient program provides structured treatment while allowing you to continue living at home. IOP can be appropriate for people who need more support than traditional weekly therapy or who are stepping down from a higher level of care.
Mission Connection’s IOP includes clinician-led group therapy, individual therapy, psychiatric services when needed, and family support. Programs may be available in person, virtually, or through a hybrid format depending on location and eligibility.
Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP)
A partial hospitalization program provides a higher level of structured outpatient support while allowing you to return home at the end of the treatment day. Mission Connection’s PHP generally provides programming five days per week for approximately six hours per day.
Your clinical team can help determine which level of care is appropriate based on your symptoms, safety, treatment history, and current needs.
Our outcomes speak for themselves. Mission Connection delivers measurable results through evidence-based treatment.
In-Person, Virtual, and Hybrid Treatment
Finding treatment that is flexible and fits into your life can make it easier to stay engaged in care. Mission Connection offers outpatient treatment through in-person, virtual, and hybrid options at participating locations.
Virtual treatment can provide additional flexibility for people who have transportation challenges, live farther from a treatment center, or prefer receiving care from home.
What to Expect
Starting treatment does not mean you need to have everything figured out. Your first step is an assessment with a member of our clinical team.
During the assessment, we’ll learn more about your mental health, substance use, medical history, current circumstances, and treatment goals. This information helps us determine whether outpatient treatment is an appropriate level of care and develop recommendations based on your needs.
If outpatient treatment is a good fit, you’ll work with your treatment team to create a personalized plan and begin participating in your recommended services.
