A Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP) at Mission Connection

A Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP) is an intensive kind of outpatient mental health care. It’s suitable for people who aren’t seeing the benefits from weekly therapy, need a slightly more intensive program, and want to try daily therapeutic work without 24/7 residential treatment.

Mission Connection delivers a community-driven PHP experience in a daytime setting. You will attend a consistent therapy schedule of six hours per day, five days per week, with multiple types of therapy sessions every day.

On this page, you will learn about the daily structure and format for the PHP offered at Mission Connection’s treatment locations across the country.

The Schedule and Structure of Our Partial Hospitalization Program

Although our PHP follows an intensive schedule, it is still flexible enough to maintain your independence. The program runs for five days per week, and each day, your daily programming will last between five and seven hours. Oftentimes, we maintain a six-hour-per-day schedule.

Since PHP is a form of outpatient program, you are not expected to reside at the facility. Instead, you attend your scheduled clinical services during the day and return home in the evenings.

As such, the program gives you enough time to engage with your treatment at an active pace. Meanwhile, you continue with your responsibilities at home and stay connected to your support systems outside of the clinical setting.

Who Benefits the Most From Our PHP

Our PHP is for adults aged 18 and older who:

  1. Need a higher level of care than what they get from weekly therapy sessions.
  2. Do not need 24/7, round-the-clock residential treatment and supervision.
  3. Can’t leave all of their responsibilities to stay at a residential treatment facility.

It works great as a middle ground in the continuum of care between rigorous inpatient treatment and weekly outpatient sessions.

This level of care can also be especially helpful during times of transition. For example, many people transition into PHP after completing residential treatment. In this instance, PHP is a way to stay supported as they ease back into daily routines. For others, PHP may be the right place to start – particularly if symptoms are significantly impacting day-to-day functioning and require a more comprehensive approach than weekly therapy sessions.

The Structure of a Typical PHP Day

An average day of treatment in our PHP consists of immersive, multiple forms of therapy. One week spent in our community-based environment equates to about three months of traditionally delivered weekly therapy.

The daily structure includes:

  • Group therapy. The primary therapeutic setting in our program is daily group therapy. In these spaces, you get peer support and develop practical skills of emotional regulation, communication, self-awareness, mindfulness, etc.
  • Individual therapy. Each client in treatment gets to participate in a dedicated weekly one-on-one therapy session where they get personalized attention.
  • Psychiatry and medication management. The program takes care of your psychiatric needs as well. If you take medications for any co-occurring psychiatric disorders, your clinicians will ensure that you get complete mental and physical health oversight.
  • Family integration. If your treatment requires active family involvement, you may also be given access to family or couples counseling sessions. It’s important to note that families of all adult clients get to attend a virtual bi-weekly family support group on Tuesday evenings.

Our PHP Formats and Locations

Mission Connection offers in-person PHP at several regional centers, including:

  • San Juan Capistrano, CA
  • Bellevue, WA
  • Seattle (Green Lake), WA
  • Falls Church, VA

Besides the in-person format, you can also choose to attend a fully virtual PHP if you can’t make it to the facility every day. Online PHP also follows similar schedules to the in-person program. Your treatment sessions will be conducted through a HIPAA-compliant, secure video conferencing app.

Furthermore, our clients can use our hybrid programming option, which combines the benefits of both in-person and virtual PHP. You can come to the facility a few days a week and attend your therapy sessions from your home the rest of the week.

For those whose home environment is not favorable, Mission Connection also offers non-clinical supportive housing options. These homes are either gender-specific or co-educational (meaning males and females receive treatment within the same home), depending on your preference, and are available in:

  • Lake Forest, CA
  • San Juan Capistrano, CA
  • McLean, VA

Note that supportive housing requires an additional private-pay fee of $1,500 per month. It is not insurance-covered.

The Therapeutic Modalities We Use in Our PHP

At Mission Connection, our PHP uses a lot of evidence-based therapeutic approaches for different purposes throughout the day. The core modalities we use are:

  • Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) to help you identify and subsequently change negative thought patterns.
  • Dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) that builds your emotional regulation skills.
  • Eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR) for those with a history of psychological trauma.
  • Trauma-focused CBT to address trauma-related distressing thoughts.
  • Acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT) that encourages our clients to accept difficult emotions and commit to values-based action.

In addition to these clinical approaches, the program also uses holistic therapies. Such sessions are based on yoga, reiki, music therapy, and wellbriety (a Native American healing approach that fosters cultural connection).
